Throughout the pandemic, Cuyahoga faced a shortage of correctional officers due to illness. This issue was exacerbated by the fact that the jails were already short-staffed for the level of individuals incarcerated.

In December, the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine authorized county administrators to use national guard members to assist correctional officers.
